Astigmatic Correcting Toric Intraocular Lens
For those cataract patients struggling with astigmatism, LaserVue Eye Center and Jay Bansal, MD in Santa Rosa, CA is proud to offer the AcrySof IQ Toric Intraocular Lens (IOL) for the correction of astigmatism in cataract surgery.
What is Astigmatism?
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is shaped like a football (more curved in one direction than the other) and often occurs with nearsightedness or farsightedness. This causes light to focus in more than one point on the retina, resulting in blurry and distorted vision.
Correction of astigmatism in cataract surgery.
Approximately 20 percent of patients who need cataract surgery have a clinically significant degree of preexisting astigmatism. Traditional cataract surgery with a monofocal lens cannot correct any pre-existing astigmatism. Cataract surgery patients with this vision irregularity, however, can request the use of Toric IOLs during their lens replacement surgery.
The AcrySof IQ Toric IOL is specially designed to eliminate any astigmatism during cataract surgery. Instead of replacing the clouded lens with a traditional monofocal lens, Dr. Jay Bansal will instead use the AcrySof IQ Toric IOL to correct the astigmatism.
This lens works similarly to a contact lens by refocusing light to sharpen your vision. These lenses provide good distance vision and improve or eliminate astigmatism, but most patients still require reading glasses.
The AcrySof Toric IOL also has a unique feature providing a filtered blue light to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and artificial lighting that can also strain your eyes.
By choosing the AcrySof Toric IOL for your cataract surgery, you will not only gain clear vision from eliminating your cataracts but you can also expect:
- Enhanced image quality
- More vibrant colors
- Increased chance of spectacle independence for distance vision
In fact, in FDA trials, 97% of bilaterally implanted patients achieved spectacle freedom for distance vision.
