Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking
LASIK is not an option for someone who has been diagnosed with keratoconus. There are other possible treatments however. Corneal collagen cross-linking, or CXL, is a revolutionary noninvasive outpatient treatment for progressive keratoconus patients and corneal ectasia patients. This treatment requires nothing more than a riboflavin-containing solution and an ultraviolet light delivery device to strengthen the cornea. CXL treatments slow or halt progressive keratoconus for about 90% of patients and improve vision in more than half of patients treated.
How is CXL Performed?
First, numbing drops are added to the eyes to ensure patient comfort. Riboflavin solution drops are added to the eye; these drops saturate the cornea in riboflavin for about thirty minutes. Special cases may necessitate removal of the outermost corneal epithelial cells prior to the addition of riboflavin. Once the eye is thoroughly saturated, the eye is treated with ultraviolet light. This treatment lasts between 5 and 30 minutes.
How Does CXL work?
Ultraviolet light reacts at a molecular level with riboflavin on the surface of the cornea. Resulting bonds, or cross-links, make the cornea stronger. Strengthening the cornea slows, and for many patients stops, progressive keratoconus and corneal ectasia.
